Lecture Summaries

Introduction

At each monthly meeting the society usually invites a guest speaker to talk on some topic of interest to the astronomical community.  Each speaker comes from a university, a technical institute, another astronomical society or from our own society.  Topics covered are diverse and not always complex.  They range from the latest technical results and future plans in some field of research (which we don't always understand!), what can be done with astronomical software, a summary of what to look for in the skies over coming months (planets, meteor showers) or just an introduction to someone's pet interest/project (e.g. astro-photography).

If you have ever thought about coming to society meetings to hear the presentations but were unsure if it would all just "go over my head" and didn't want to ask (we've all been there, no matter our age, knowledge or experience), or perhaps just wondered what our speakers talk about at meetings, this section may be helpful.

This section gives summaries of some past talks given to the society as noted by a member of the society, not necessarily anyone with great astronomical knowledge.  Each is necessarily just one person's view of what was said and, as such, is not guaranteed to be an accurate description of the complete contents of lectures;  they are provided to give an insight into the kind of talks presented.  Summaries will normally be posted about 6 weeks after the relevant meeting.

Lectures are listed on a separate page for each year.  For each lecture we list the date, the speaker and lecture title.  Click on the meeting date to open the document in a new tab/window.
